The woke vs anti-woke outrage continues, and it’s now spilled into one of America’s most iconic sports teams.
The MLB’s Los Angeles Dodgers are the next to fall into controversy after uninviting the queer and transgendered group The Sister of Perpetual Indulgence to its 10th Annual LGBTQ+ Pride Night scheduled for June 16.
The group — which was supposed to be honored with a Community Hero Award by the Dodgers — was removed from the line-up on Wednesday due to backlash that the franchise received from their original inclusion.
“Given the strong feelings of people who have been offended by the sisters’ inclusion in our evening, and in an effort not to distract from the great benefits that we have seen over the years of Pride Night, we have decided to remove them from this year’s group of honorees,” the Dodgers’ statement read.
The Sister of Perpetual Indulgence are a human rights group dedicated to achieving equality for the LQBTQ+ community. They’ve been credited for helping raise both awareness and finances to help with causes such AIDS awareness and gender equality.
“We believe all people have a right to express their unique joy and beauty,” the group’s website reads.
However, their means of action have been described as anti-Christian by right-wing ideologists due to the group’s parody act of dressing as nuns. Florida Senator Marco Rubio was the biggest voice against the group and his letter to the MLB Commissioner Robert Manfred is believed to be the trigger for the Dodgers’ decision.
“I write to ask whether your League wants to be “inclusive and welcoming” to Christians, and if so, why you are allowing an MLB team to honor a group that mocks Christians through diabolical parodies of our faith,” Rubio’s letter to Manfred read.
California Senator Scott Wiener was quick to express his disappointment on the Dodgers’ decision.
“Really sad to see the Dodgers cave to pressure & kick drag queens out of a Pride celebration,” Wiener said on Twitter. “The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence do amazing, life-saving work in the community.”
